What is Chitosan Oligosaccharide Powder?
Chitosan oligosaccharides, also known as chito-oligosaccharides or low-molecular-weight chitosans, are oligosaccharides with a degree of polymerization (DP) between 2 and 20, obtained by degrading chitosan using a specialized enzymatic process (chemical degradation and microwave degradation have also been reported). These oligosaccharides have a molecular weight of ≤3200 Da and are characterized by good water solubility, potent functional properties, and high biological activity. They possess numerous unique properties not found in chitosan, including high solubility, complete water solubility, and easy absorption and utilization by organisms. Their activity is 14 times that of chitosan.
Chitosan oligosaccharides are the only naturally occurring, positively charged, cationic, alkaline amino oligosaccharides and are derived from animal-derived cellulose. Chitosan oligosaccharides are small, amino-containing oligosaccharides derived from the degradation of chitosan from shrimp and crab shells. They are sugar chains with a DP of 2 to 20.
